The Power of Music is a publication from Resonate Music School & Studio in Edmonton. It exists because there is room for a music school publication that takes its subject seriously enough to source its claims.

Essays here are written carefully and slowly. Where research is mixed, contested, or distorted in popular retellings, we say so. Where a story is moving, we let the story carry the piece.

How to read this

Essays are organized into six categories: The Listening Mind, The Early Years, What Practice Builds, Music Across Cultures, Music in Hard Places, and Practice Notes. Each one is a different way of thinking about what music does in people’s lives.

Sources

Every named claim is checked against primary sources. Where a study is well-supported, we name the researchers and the year. Where the evidence is weaker than the headlines suggest, we name that too.
